How To Check Reader Engagement For a Particular Post Using Google Analytics
As there is no such mathematical equation to count the user engagement in numbers, so we need to figure it out by comparing user behaviour on a particular post or topic. There are many paid and free analytic tools are available to observe the user behaviour, but, the Google analytics is the best. Obviously, there are many types of users behaviour can be seen for a particular web page, but here we need to measure landing page behaviour to determine the reader’s engagement. Let’s see the tutorial-
Measure User Behaviour of a Certain Post;
Step 1. Go to the Google Analytics reporting page and select “Landing Pages” under “Behavior” section.
Step 2. Now explore Advanced section by clicking the “Advanced” tab. Here you can see all the landing pages data for your blog. But, to see some specific post data, you need to copy the post URL of the post which you want to check. Remember- copy and paste only the URL part without domain name. For instance- if your post URL like- “http://www.yourdomain.com/seo/your-post-name.html” then copy only- “/seo/your-post-name.html”.

Step 3. Now, after clicking the “Apply” button you can see the post performance such as Sessions, New Sessions, Bounce Rate and Average Session Duration. Here the bounce rate and average session duration will indicate a very closely appropriate user engagement report of the post. See the numbering sequence in the screenshot.
If your bounce rate is much higher (closer to the 100) and average session duration is too low (less than one minute) then you should understand that your post is not so much engaging people on your blog. It’s also true that there is no relation between bounce rate and post value. Because, people might leave your blog just after getting the correct information. Still then, bounce rate and average session duration are definitely indicating user engagement of your blog.
Step 4. If you want to see what pages your readers are like to browse after reading your selected post, then click “Entrance Paths” upper part of your Google Analytics page. Then choose your post URL from “User started at this landing page”. And, you can see the detailed data where your readers are going after landing on your chosen post.
